About Us

NEW CLASS-SEWING FOR KIDS The classes are designed for children between the ages of 8-10 and they are small privates and are offered on Wednesdays at 4pm.  The classes run in a series of 6 classes.  Right now the first series beginners 1 is filled but if you would like to be added to the waiting list for the next beginners series please email Laura at Laura@sewny.com for rates and info.  The approximate start date for the next beginners I is (approximately) Wednesday, March 21st, give or take a week as this is our first run with the childrens sewing classes.

We will be offering a second series after the child has completed the first 6 classes.  In the second series, beginners II, they will learn to sew items that are just a bit more advanced, perhaps a simple apron or simple skirt.

Sew New York's Sewing Classses - Fashion forward classes for beginners with Laura McCracken

Most classes are are semi private with 2 students, so you get plenty of attention as you work at your own pace, and the semi-privates are more fun then the private one-on-one classes, as you get to learn from the other student as well, and it's a better learning situation.  If you are only interested in private one-on-one you need to write and inquire for a class time.  In some cases there may be a wait to get into classes.

Many sewing schools offer classes where you make a wrap skirt or a bag in about 4 or 5 classes. You are learning how to use the sewing machine but you’re not learning major fundamentals that go into making a garment so that you will be able to sew and carry out projects on your own, and large classes don’t provide enough one on one attention. At sew New York the focus is to teach you all the correct fundamentals and techniques for machine sewing as well as the many hand sewing techniques that go into making a complete garment. You will learn how to operate the sewing machine and learn to sew all the major seams, you will learn hand sewing that includes couture techniques. In class you will learn how to properly pin, cut, mark and read a pattern.

So start sewing the right way, learn how to read a pattern, learn how to put a sleeve into a garment and so much more.
