You will learn and become familiar with the tools of the trade. Discover all the great resources Manhattan's garment district has to offer and the best places to get everything for sewing in NYC. Learn the world of fabrics. Learn how to read and use a pattern.
Most classes are are semi-private with 2 students, so you will get plenty of one-on one attention as you work at your own pace, and the semi-privates are a bit more fun then the private one-on-one classes, as you also get to learn from the other student. Classes are 1hr 55 minutes, and meet once a week at your scheduled class time.
We can teach you how to sew interior goods as well.
Private one-on-one classes are offered, please email Laura@SewNY.com and write to inquire for a class time.
Many sewing schools offer classes where you make a simple wrap skirt or a tote bag in about 4 or 5 classes, basically you are just sewing straight seams and not much more. In these classes you are learning how to use the sewing machine but you’re not learning the major fundamental techniques that go into sewing a garment, so that you will be able to sew and carry out projects on your own, and large classes don’t provide enough one-on-one attention. Our focus is to teach you all the correct fundamentals and techniques from sewing at the machine, as well as the many hand sewing techniques that go into constructing a complete garment.
So start sewing the right way, learn how to read a pattern, learn how to put in a zipper, or how to put a sleeve into a garment and so much more.
Your first project will be a complete skirt and the finished product will be beautifully and professionally constructed, one that you will be proud to wear.
Draping 101 (Draping classes are temporarily suspended). Apparel Design-learn the art of draping in 3 dimensional form. This class is an introduction to basic draping principles.
